Mariachi, Gospel Bands Surprise Concertgoers at 'Magical' Porta Potty

Attendees at the Governors Ball Music Festival had no idea what was in store.

— -- Attendees at this year’s Governors Ball Music Festival in New York who thought they were getting away from the music by going to the bathroom got a big surprise.

Hidden inside a “magical” porta potty were a stream of performers, ranging from a mariachi band to a Gospel choir to Bollywood dancers and a brass band.

The prank came courtesy of Improv Everywhere, a New York City-based prank collective.

On Tuesday, the group posted a video of the early June surprise on YouTube.

The prank’s origins began thanks to a friendship between Improv Everywhere’s founder, Charlie Todd, and two of the founders of Governors Ball, an outdoor music festival that takes place on New York City’s Randall’s Island.

The festival’s facilities crew cut a hole in the back of one porta potty and then put it in the middle of a row of normal porta potties, in order to throw off the unsuspecting festival attendees.

The performers lined up behind the porta potty and when the door was open, out the front they came, in all their musical glory.

“One guy who had opened the door told me after one of the performances, ‘I’ve been to lots of festivals, but I’ve never had a performance that was just for me,’” Improv Comedy’s Todd, who created the idea and directed it all, wrote on the group’s website.
