It has been almost a year since Mexico-based Volaris Airlines began flying two direct-to-Mexico routes from Denver International Airport — and things are looking good for the low-cost carrier.

Volaris began direct service to Guadalajara and Chihuahua in July.

The Guadalajara route, which began flying once a week, grew so quickly — 60 percent in the first nine months of service — that Volaris added another flight.

Denver-based Frontier Airlines previously flew to Guadalajara from Denver in 2006 but pulled out of the market.

The Chihuahua market was not served from the U.S. until Volaris started flying the route from Denver and it grew 500 percent in the first nine months of service, the airport reports.

The cost for Volaris to operate one round-trip flight to Guadalajara is $34,380, and the cost for one Denver-to-Chihuahua flight is $25,205, according to Laura Jackson, DIA’s vice president of air service development.
