The Delhi Jal Board has set up a probe into alleged irregularities in the tenders for buying stainless steel water tankers during the tenure of the previous Congress government. Sheila Dikshit, who was also the chairperson of the DJB and Mateen Ahmed, a former DJB member, have been named in the investigation, said a government source.

Sources said the inquiry was initiated on Monday. AAP MLA from Kirari, Rituraj, who is also a member of DJB confirmed that the investigation has started. “An investigation has been initiated. The matter is being probed and it is too early to say anything concrete,” he said.

An official said the investigation pertains to a tender which was released three years ago to acquire stainless steel water tankers to bolster the DJB’s fleet. “In 2012, around 400 water tankers were acquired by the DJB and manufactured by a private contractor after receiving complaints of irregular service. The purchase of these water tankers was aimed at ensuring seamless service across Delhi,” said a DJB official, adding that the capacity of these tankers was supposed to range between 3 and 9 kilolitre.

An AAP leader explained, “There have been various complaints about the process of privatising water supply in Delhi. It wasn’t a transparent process and presently we are simply attempting to clear the waters muddied by the previous government.”

Reacting to the news, Mateen Ahmed, ex-MLA from Seelampur, said, “I personally welcome the investigation. In fact, I invite the CBI to conduct the investigation. I know I have done nothing wrong, but any seeming irregularity needs to be looked into.”
