MADURAI: A public interest litigation has been filed in the Madurai bench of the
Madras high court alleging that the Trichy City Corporation is polluting the
Cauvery by letting drainage into the river.
In his petition, P Ayyakannu, president of the National South Indian River Irrigation Agriculturists Association, said Cauvery water is used for water as well as irrigation purposes in Trichy, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.
However, drainage from different parts of the city pollutes the water in the river. “Due to the
pollution, devotees visiting the Srirangam temple and other temples, situated on the banks of the Cauvery, are affected when they take holy bath in the river,” he said.
Accusing officials of not taking any action to prevent pollution of the river, the petitioner sought a direction to the district collector, public works department secretary, river irrigation chief engineer and executive engineer of the pollution control board to take action against the city corporation and to submit an action taken report in the court.
When the petition came up for admission, the division bench of justices A Selvam and V S Ravi ordered notices to the above mentioned officials and adjourned the matter.
