Milan Fashion Week: highlights from Fendi, Etro, Canali

Color seems to be the magic word for the Spring / Summer 2016 menswear collections in Milan, with Monday shows including Etro, Fendi and Canali offering up a vibrant palette of pretty hues.

Italian fashion house Etro turned out a vibrant, fluid collection inspired by Aboriginal prints, featuring paisley and floral motifs as one of its main components. Whether printed boldly over jacquard top coats or used more discreetly as a stylish lining, the swirling patterns adorned everything from trousers to shirts, lending a dignified ornate aura to the collection. The house played with gender stereotypes, dressing models head to toe in feminine colors such as dusky pinks and lilac suedes for a look that was both pretty and plush.

Fendi also used color as its secret weapon, using flashes of strong primary hues to liven up its deceptively simple, informal collection. Leather coats were given an edge thanks to their bright yellow hue, and the t-shirt was given a luxurious makeover in the form of soft, shimmery metallics. The collection focused on the interplay between rich textures and fabrics with the informal vibe demonstrated by the fluid cut of pieces including lightweight trouser and jacket combinations.

Elegant, gemlike hues were also on show at Canali, where graceful lilacs, dusky violets, burnt oranges and duck egg blues were all seen on the catwalk. Yet despite the feminine color palette, tailoring was decidedly masculine, with boxy jackets and sharp suits providing a mannish silhouette.
