BIJNOR: Parts of Bijnor district will now be under surveillance of 63 CCTV cameras after repeated incidents of crime were reported from various places.
The process was expedited keeping in mind the Bijnor blasts, which took place in September last year, in which the absconding terrorists were caught with the help of CCTV cameras.
“After the Bijnor blasts, we were able to nab the terrorists with the help of CCTVs.
This proves how effective this medium is in curbing crime. A few months earlier, attackers of a city-based trader Rajneesh Agarwal were also arrested with the help of the cameras. Apart from major crossings, many of the city’s prominent jewelers and traders are also mulling on installing cameras in their shops. This will help tackle crime,” said SP (city) Kalpana Saxena.
A fresh proposal has also been made to install 50 more cameras at crucial crossings.
Police have installed the cameras at major crossings, crowded spots and routes that lead in and out of the district. Saxena said, “We have installed cameras in all the four tehsils of the districts. Over 63 strategic spots were selected for it and a proposal for procuring 50 more cameras has also been made. In the city, cameras have been installed at places like Shakti Crossing, Chandpur Chungi Crossing, Post Office Crossing, Numaish Ground Crossing and St Mary Crossing. The CO’s office will be made the control room for these cameras. This will help us control crimes such as eve-teasing, chain-snatching and auto thefts.”
