Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) took out a march to the district medical office in Kanhangad on Monday, seeking better facilities for fever patients who have been crowding government hospitals.

Around 250 activists under the aegis of the DYFI’s district committee took part in the march to the DMO office housed in the district hospital. DYFI district president K. Rajmohan and secretary K. Manikandan held talks with DMO in-charge A.P. Dinesh Kumar.

Difficult

Dr. Kumar said the authorities were finding it difficult to fill vacancies of physicians. Outpatient examination in all government hospitals in the district would be extended beyond 3 p.m.

He also promised steps to post an additional physician in the district hospital in view of the rise in the number of patients.

As many as 55 posts of physicians are vacant in the district. In many cases, doctors go on leave to pursue postgraduation.

Another issue was that not many doctors were inclined to work in rural areas.

Those from other districts were always keen to get a transfer, he said.
