NCC takes part in yoga event

Over 3000 cadets perform various poses

A total of 3121 National Cadet Corps NCC cadets from 30 schools and 10 colleges in the 10 Tamil Nadu NCC Battalion, Vellore performed Yogasanas in unison in an attempt at a Guinness Record-making national event in connection with the International Yoga Day at the VIT University ground here on Sunday.

Starting from 7 a.m., the event concluded at 7.33 a.m. as per the directions of NCC Director General. The cadets performed various poses under the direction of Yoga instructor Balaraman of the `Vazhga Valamudan’ Vethathiri Maharishi Yoga Movement.

G.V. Selvam, Vice-President of VIT University released balloons and inaugurated the programme in the presence of Lt. Col. R. Sureshkumar, Commanding Officer of the 10 TN NCC Battalion.

Mr. Selvam wanted Yoga to be included in the school and college syllabus since the practice of Yoga increased one’s longevity. The VIT would be taking steps to include Yoga in its syllabus from this academic year, he said.

K. Raja, Public Relations Officer of the NCC Battalion said that 10 TN NCC Battalion, Vellore was the largest NCC battalion in Tamil Nadu. About 15 lakhs NCC cadets performed Yogasanas simultaneously throughout the country on Sunday, he said.

D. Maninathan, Secretary, Dhanabagiyam Krishnaswamy Mudaliar College for Women, Vellore and L. Selvarani, Headmistress, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Katpadi participated in the inaugural function. T. Gunasekar, Associate NCC Officer, VIT welcomed the gathering.

In NDRF

A large number of personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) battalion in Arakkonam performed Yogasanas in connection with International Yoga Day at the battalion premises. Sanjay Kumar, Commandant, Sandrew W.N., Deputy Commandant, and M.E.A. Ghani, Jitesh T.M. and Saravanan, Assistant Commandants were among those who participated in the event.

Dance yoga

A dance Yoga programme was conducted at the premises of Swasam Nature and Yoga Hospital in Gandhinagar, Katapadi in connection with the International Yoga day celebrations on Sunday. It was organised jointly by the Indian Red Cross Society, Vellore district, Katpadi sub branch, Swasam Hospital, Vidiyal Iyarkai Unavagam and Iyarkai Nalvazhviyal Iyakkam.

M. Vasanthi, Revenue Divisional Officer, Vellore and president of the Katpadi sub branch of IRCS inaugurated the programme. Gopala Rajendran, former District Elementary Education Officer, Krishnagiri presided.

T.V. Sivasubramanian, president of the Management Committee, IRCS Katpadi sub branch and S.N. Janardhanan,, the honorary secretary of the sub branch participated.
