Violet would greet those driving down the Gachibowli-APPA stretch on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and between APPA and Shamshabad, it would be the colour orange. The corridor between Narsingi and Kolluru would unveil a riot of pink and lined up along Ghatkesar and Pedda Amberpet would be the yellow.

In an innovative step, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has decided to take up massive avenue plantation along the ORR with different coloured flower giving plants for different stretches. Nearly 148 kms of the eight-lane expressway has been divided into 12 packages with each earmarked for a particular plant species representing a chosen colour.

The stretch-wise colour patterns worked out look at ‘Spathodea campanulata’ providing orange flowering on Keesara-Ghatkesar (12 km) and APPA-Shamshabad (13.38 km), ‘Bignonia megapotomica’ for white on Patancheru-Kolluru (11.7 km) and Dundigal-Shameerpet (15.7 km) and so on. “We are looking at setting up nearly three lakh plants along the 148 kms of the ORR and have invited bids for taking up the work,” said HMDA Member Environment S.Srinivas.

The Authority plans to have the pitting works along the ORR and the service roads completed by June 30 and planting process taken care of by July-end. The project has been drawn up to include two rows of avenue plantation on the main carriageway, one on each side of the ORR, and four rows on the service road.

The HMDA has few nurseries of its own to source most of the required seedlings and for the rest, plans have been made to outsource from others, according to officials. “Our nurseries at Tellapur, Shamshabad, Hakimpet and Cherlapally have been tied-up to supply most of the needed seedling,” said an official.
