World Music Day special: Our favourite Antakshari songs ever!
When was the last time you played antakshari? Don't remember? Well, we might have grown out of the khela-dhula phase, but once in a while -like when an `adda' is heading in the `ad-duh' direction -we wonder baithebaithe kya kare!
Surprisingly, no matter how popular Honey or Arijit Singh songs might be, they fade before our all-time favourite antakshari staples.
On the occasion of World Music Day, invite your friends and family over and relive the magic of Nazar ke samne, Pehla nasha and more. Let the games begin! PS: We made you a cheat sheet too!
ARE RE ARE YE KYA HUA (DIL TO PAGAL HAI, 1997)

Madhuri Dixit in purple spandex. And that crazy hand movement which seemed to say, “ooh, ki jhaal!“ Aah, memories.Backup option: Adaayein bhi hai (Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, 1991)
AAJ MAIN UPAR (KHAMOSHI: THE MUSICAL, 1996)

Feminists, get your history right. Here's woman's lib, '90s style.Aaj main aage, zamana hai peeche = Eat sh*t society. I don't give a damn about your opinions anyway.Backup option: Aaja aayi bahar (Rajkumar, 1964)

IMLI KA BOOTA* (SAUDAGAR, 1991)
The only song in the vast repertoire of Bollywood Holi songs that doesn't talk about Holi! And contrary to what your might think, it also doesn't talk about tamarind or plum. On the other hand, Raaj Kumar and Dilip Kumar sure rocked the bromance in this one.Backup option: Ichak dana bichak dana (Shree 420, 1955)
UI AMMA UI AMMA (RAJA BABU, 1994)
A young Govinda, A pre-makeover bushy-browed Karisma Kapoor, a rustic landscape and an elephant. They owned the '90s. Period.Backup option: Ude jab jab zulfen teri (Naya Daur, 1957)
EK DIN BIK JAYEGA, MAATI KE MOL (DHARAM KARAM, 1975)

We had absolutely no clue what the song meant (some of us still haven't fig ured it out) back then.Heck, we spent the better part of our lives thinking it was, `ek din beet jaayega maati ke mol'' and yet, we couldn't do without it.Backup option: Ae ji o ji (Ram Lakhan, 1989)
AYE MERE HUMSAFAR (QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, 1988)HUMSAFAR (QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, 1988)
The proclamation of undying love -that's what this song was all about. Baby-faced Aamir and Juhi, college excursions with friends, crossing off dates on a calendar -oh the joys of first love! Backup option: Ae kash ke hum (Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, 1994)
O MERE DIL KE CHAIN (MERE JEEVAN SAATHI, 1972)
A song that proved to us that Rajesh Khanna's eyebrows could singlehandedly take on Mithun Chakraborty, Pravu Deva, Hrithik Roshan in a dance off! End of story.Backup option: O mere sona re (Teesri Manzil, 1966)
KABOOTAR JA JA JA* (MAINE PYAR KIYA, 1989)

Yes, it's the same bird that's in the midst of the raging `spy pigeon controversy' now. It escaped Bhagyashree's clutches, flew right past Salman Khan's ears and landed in Pakistan, where it was groomed as a national spy. PS: All characters in this inference are fictitious and bear no resemblance to anybody, dead or alive.Backup option: Kya hua tera wada (Yaadon Ki Baaraat, 1973)
KHAMBE JAISI KHADI HAI (DIL, 1990)
Thank God the song was shot before UGC issued strict anti-ragging guidelines. Because, listen to that absolutely sexist, degrading, cant-get-outta-my-head lyrics, set to that cheesy but delightfully catchy tune. That, right there, is ragging my friend! Backup option: Khoya khoya chaand (Kala Bazar, 1960)
GORE GORE MUKHDE PE KALA KALA CHASMA (SUHAAG, 1994)

This is the song that marked the transition from lyrics penned to the beloved's eyes to paying tribute to the ladylove's sunnies.Backup option: Gawah hai chand taarein gawah hai (DaminiLightning, 1993)
GHAR SE NIKALTE HI (PAPA KEHTE HAI, 1996)
At a time when songs were composed to match pelvic thrusts, this was the song that all the then intellectuals were listening to. Plus, it featured a guitar-in-hand hero, who (to top it all) was cute! Backup option: Ghoonghat ki aad se dilbar ka (Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, 1993)
CHAHE TUM KUCH NA KAHO (JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR, 1992)

Our team of girls, and the handful of men, unanimously agree that Pehla nasha has to feature under this subhead -at any cost! No game of Antakshari can be complete without Aamir Khan jumping from various heights, evidently in the throes of first love.Backup option: Chanda re (Sapnay, 1997)
CHHAMMA CHHAMMA (CHINA GATE, 1998)

Of all the different musical notes that have denoted the sound of payals and ghoongroos through the history of Bollywood films, Chamma chamma is our favourite. Why? Have you seen Urmila's killer moves in the song? Backup option: Chhukar mere man ko (Yaarana, 1981)
JAB KOI BAAT BIGAD JAAYE (JURM, 1990)
Ekta Kapoor still uses this song in the background of many of her soaps! That should tell you something about the brilliance of this number. The fact that the lyrics say exactly what human beings have been saying to their loved ones for as long as we can remember, comes second.Backup option: Jaane jigar jaan e man (Aashiqui, 1990)
JHANJHARIYA (KRISHNA, 1996)
You think you know swag? You know nothing about swag until you have seen Suneil Shetty go JJJhaa-JJJhaari-YYYaa, head-to-toe wrapped in black. It sure took daring to make a love song, featuring Karisma Kapoor and a heard of sheep, sound like the background score of a psychological thriller.Backup option: Jhoot bole kauwa kaate (Bobby, 1973)
TIP TIP BARSA PAANI (MOHRA, 1994)
This is the stuff that wet (just talking about rain, don't get ideas!) dreams were made of for boys in the '90s. And this is also the stuff that brought chiffon sari to the forefront of world fashion. Turns out, since then, the sale of chiffon saris go up every monsoon.Backup option: Tip tip tip tip baarish shuru ho gayi (Afsana Pyar Ka, 1991)
THADE RAHIYO O BANKE YAAR* (PAKEEZAH, 1971)
Another song that made no sense whatsoever when we heard it for the first time. What is the lady even talking about, we used to think? A boyfriend with a crooked body? You know... Banke = Byanka. Also, knowledge of the lyrics never passed the first line.Backup option: Thande thande pani se (Pati Patni Aur Woh, 1978)
DAFLIWALE DAFLI BAJA (SARGAM, 1979)

This song saw one of the best use of props in the history of Bollywood songs. Period. Remember beatboxing trying to emulate the dafli beats? Also, the step that taught us the game of kit kit? Yes... that! Backup option: Dam dam diga diga (Chhalia, 1960)
DHAL GAYA DIN HO GAYI SHAM (HUMJOLI, 1970)
The desi badminton championship, this had an allwhite wearing Jeetendra and boufant-haired Leena Chandavarkar combine badminton skills and catwalking with elan.Backup option: Dholi taro dhol baaje* (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999)
NAZAR KE SAMNEJIGAR KE PAAS (AASHIQUI, 1990)
Yes, a non-smiling Anu Agarwal, a constantly-smiling Rahul Roy and a red rose featured in this song, but it's the jodi of Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal which made this number memorable. End of story.Backup option: Najane mere dil ko kya ho gaya (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995)
TU TU TU TU TU TARA (BOL RADHA BOL, 1992)
This song was a lesson in physiotherapy. And we have no idea why being massaged by so many women at once, made Rishi Kapoor brood so bad! Backup option: Tujhe dekha to yeh jaana sanam (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995)
THODA HAI THODE KI ZAROORAT HAI (KHATTA MEETHA, 1978)
This number can be called the `dreamer's song' as well as a helpless man's anthem! Let's face it, all we want is everything. This number just sums it up.Backup option: Tham tham tham khushiyon ke jaam (Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, 1992)
DIL HAI KE MANTA NAHIN (DIL HAI KE MANTA NAHIN, 1991)
The heavy sighs, lost gazes, mindful unmindful twirling of hay...Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt were like our own reflections. A comment below the YouTube video read, “I guess there is something seriously wrong with those 108 people who disliked this video... May god bless them.“ We agree.Backup option: Deewana dil deewana (Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, 1994)
DHEERE DHEERE PYAR KO BADHANA HAI (PHOOL AUR KAANTE, 1991)
Such suggestive lyrics, such a beautiful tune... maybe that is what the '90s was all about! We bet you never drew any connection between the words `hadd se guzar jana hai', Ajay Devgn riding a stallion and the wedding-night scene. Until now. Get the drift? Backup option: Dheere dheere se meri (Aashiqui, 1990)
PYAR HUA IQRAR HUA (SHREE 420, 1955)

Iconic setting, iconic lyrics, iconic scene, iconic umbrella and iconic actors. Need we say more? This song defines romance. Period.Backup option: Papa kehte hain bada naam karega (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, 1988)
PHOOLON KA TARON KA (HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA, 1971)
Apart from antakshari, this also doubled up as the quintessential Rakhi song. And no matter how many years have passed, it still manages to tearup eye ducts when sung to your sister.Backup option: Phoolon sa chehra tera (Anari, 1993)
BOL RADHA BOL (BOL RADHA BOL, 1992)
Juhi Chawla's gaon ki gori act, Rishi Kapoor's colourful sweaters and the must-have-'90s accessory -the dafli -are what come to mind. That is if all the glass-work on Juhi aka Radha's blouse didn't blind you before that! Backup option: Bahon ke darmiyan (Khamoshi: The Musical, 1996)
BHOLI BHALI LADKI (SABSE BADA KHILADI, 1995)
Akshay, Akshay and Akshay -yes, Mamata Kulkarni might have sizzled throughout the film (especially in the Maang meri bharo song), but all eyes remain glued to the sabse bada khiladi and not the bholi bhali ladki in this number.Backup option: Bhool gaya sab kuch (Julie, 1975)
MAINE PYAR TUMHI SE KIYA HAI (PHOOL AUR KAANTE, 1991)
It's the song with which you begin the game. Period. In fact, it's almost like an extension of the Baithe baithe kya kare chant. And you can't possibly sing this number without doing the duck-head movement. Remember? Backup option: Mujhe neend na aaye (Dil, 1990)
YAAD AA RAHA HAI (DISCO DANCER, 1982)

Mithunda. Bappida. Disco Dancer. `Comprenda', we mean comprende? This chartbuster can officially be awarded the title “the song that nobody forgets“! And whoever sings it, has to do the customary `tudu dook, tudu dook, tuk' before repeating the first stanza again.Backup option: Yamma yamma (Shaan, 1980)
RUKMANI RUKMANI (ROJA, 1992)
Whenever we broke into Rukmani Rukmani, our parents would hustle us up to the next song with a “ei gaan ta na, onyo gaan gaao!“ but offer no explanation. Aah, if only they knew that our wicked minds needed none! Backup option: Ruk ruk ruk arey baba ruk (Vijaypath, 1994)
LAL LAL HOTHON PE (NAAJAYAZ, 1995)
This is the original Lungi song! How? Almost all the men in the song, including hero Ajay Devgn, are wearing the garment, machhwara ishtyle! And you can't miss the paansmeared lal honth... of Ajay Devgn! Backup option: Lo chali main (Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, 1994)
WAADA RAHA SANAM (KHILADI, 1992)
The love anthem of the '90s. It won't be wrong to say that everyone from age 16 to 60 fell in love listening to this. Getting white flashes? That's probably Ayesha Jhulka and Akshay you're remembering! Backup option: Wo meri neend mera chain lauta do (Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, 1993)
SHAYAD MERI SHAADI KA KHAYAL (SOUTEN, 1983)
All hail The Proposal Song! Some might like this song because of Tina Munim, some for Rajesh Khanna, but everyone loves it for the rhythm in the chaa-ye pe bulaaaayaaa haaai line.Backup option: Shairana si hai zindagi (Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee, 1993)
SAAT SAMUNDAR PAAR MEIN TERE (VISHWATMA, 1992)
Divya Bharti shimmering in an LWD -yes, long before all the fashionistas of the world woke up to the little white dress, the actress did some killer moves in it. Remember to do “chhhhhhssssh“ after you utter saat samundar! Backup option: Saathiya tune kya kiya (Love, 1991)
HAI HUKKU HAI HUKKU (GOPI KISHAN, 1994)
Suneil Shetty in dark sunglasses and a white tee moving sideways (it's a step!) with a green-as-a-tree Karisma Kapoor. And don't forget the pelvic thrusts.Jaaye jaaye jaaye.. yes! Backup option: Hawa hawa e hawa (sung by Pakistani singer Hasan Jahangir)
ZAROORAT HAI ZAROORAT HAI (MAN-MAUJI, 1962)
Kishore Kumar and Sadhana make this one of those evergreen numbers that are absolutely indispensable when playing antakshari. Also, the fact that very few songs begin with za, make it extremely zaroori! Backup option: Zara zara behekta hai (Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, 2001)
(*We would cheat for these songs, because they start with some different lines but are popular for the ones we are using)
