JAMMU, June 20: Union Minister for Roads and Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari is visiting Jammu and Kashmir on June 25 and 26 during which he would lay foundation stone of strategically important Zojila tunnel in Ladakh, attend Indian Roads Conference in Srinagar and will lay foundation of important Keeriyan Gandiyal bridge over river Ravi in Kathua district linking Kathua with Punjab.
Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh told the Excelsior that Gadkari would lay foundation stone of Zojila tunnel on June 25 and will attend Indian Roads Conference at Srinagar the same day.
The Union Minister will lay foundation stone of Keeriyan Gandiyal bridge in Kathua on June 26 before returning to New Delhi.
Zojila tunnel is strategically very significant as it would connect Ladakh with rest of the country throughout the year. India wants to strengthen infrastructure in Ladakh to match China.
“Foundation stone of Keeriyan Gandiyal bridge was scheduled to be laid in September last year but was postponed due to floods followed by imposition of Model Code of Conduct in the wake of Assembly elections,’’ Dr Singh said, adding that the bridge was of historic significance for the people of the State.
