New tender for parking lots at Guindy Railway station

Tender was floated for 506 square feet on the side near Race Course at Rs 3.2 lakh

Chennai: Railways have re-issued a tender for a new contract for two parking slots at Guindy railway station as over 500 two-wheelers are parked at its premises for the past three years without security cover. The new tender that was floated on June 6 was for 506 square feet on the side near Race Course road at a price of Rs 3.2 lakh and near the station entrance on the opposite side that covers 562 square feet, for a price of Rs 4.3 lakh, railway sources informed.

Railway authorities said the last contract period was for three months and that was floated three years back. They are looking for a new private player to accept the terms and conditions. “A year ago, an entity took up the contract for maintaining the parking facility for three months but later withdrew from the contract due to financial issues. Until then, no private party, who has approached us, has been able to come onboard on the stated contract terms,” said a senior railway official from Chennai central division.

Passengers also maintain that the area is not safe for parking and were of the opinion that the railway authorities should come up with a solution. “My friends and I who are working at Adyar have already raised this issue thrice with the railway staff as we park our bikes here from 10 am to 5 pm,” said Yasser Chalil, a software employee, who has been parking his two-wheeler there for the past seven months.
