The Assistant Drug Licensing Authority, Solan, Ravinder Chawdhary, issued a notice to L’Oreal India after its premium casting crème 300 hair dye failed to conform to norms yesterday.

Confirming the development, Chawdhary said drug inspector Basant Mittal had lifted samples of this product and it was tested at Kandaghat-based composite testing laboratory.

Derivatives of chemical diaime tolune 2, 5 diaime and 2,4 diamine phenoxy ethanol hydrochloride were found, which were not displayed on the label, misleading consumers about the presence of this chemical in the high-end product.

Further, though the product expires in February 2018, one of its ingredients, nutrishine conditioner, has an expiry date of January 2018. Violation included in the form of place of manufacturing, where the second last character of batch number failed to convey requisite information.

Mittal, who detected the violations after randomly lifting the samples from the market, said action to freeze the stock and recall the specific batches from retailers, wholesalers and C and F bases had been initiated and they were awaiting the response of the company before proceeding further.

The case comes close on the heels of Nestle’s Maggi, where claims about ingredients displayed and those present led to a controversy.

Mittal said PPD chemical could have allergic reactions and skipping mention in the warning and conditions of use was a serious violation of labelling norms in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
