Pre-monsoon showers lash Chamba; one washed away

SHIMLA: One person was swept away following a cloudburst in Chamba district as the first pre-monsoon showers lashed some parts of the state.

One person was swept away following a cloudburst in Chamba district as the first pre-monsoon showers lashed some parts of the state. Five houses were destroyed and 20 damaged while heavy damage was caused to crops and roads.

A cloudburst occurred in Sahu, Kidi and Atulai villages in Chamba district and one person was washed away in Atulai village. Houses were destroyed and crops and roads damaged in the district, Deputy Commissioner M Sudha Devi said.

Main roads were restored while link roads would be restored by tomorrow, she said. Interim relief was provided to the affected, she added. The deceased was identified as Raj Kumar, a resident of Dehra in the Sahu area of the district. An amount of Rs 10,000 was sanctioned as immediate relief to the next of kin of the deceased.

Widespread pre-monsoon showers lashed the region while some parts of the state experienced heavy rain, indicating that the arrival of the monsoon would be on time, said Manmohan Singh, Director of the local meteorological station.

A heavy downpour occurred at Gohar in Mandi district, which received 110 mm of rain. Gaggal in Kangra received 76 mm rain and Sangrah and Mehre 71 mm each, disrupting normal life.

Solan, Dharampur and Kumarsein in Solan district received 63 mm, 61 mm and 60 mm of rain, respectively. Mashobra near Shimla received 57 mm rain, followed by Paonta Sahib (50 mm), Aghar (47 mm), Nahan (43 mm), Hamirpur and Mandi (40 mm), Shimla and Arki (37 mm) and Una (36 mm).

The normal date of the arrival of monsoon in Shimla was June 29, said Manmohan Singh. Last year, it arrived on July 3 and its arrival this time might be advanced by a day or two as pre-monsoon rain would continue till monsoon arrival, he said.

The local meteorological office predicted rain and thundershowers throughout the state for the next six days and heavy rain or thunderstorms at isolated places in the mid-hills and lower hills on June 22 and 23.

The rain brought cheer to farmers as it was considered good for maize and vegetable crops and for improvement in size and colour of apple crop.

The maximum and minimum temperatures dropped by three or four degrees following widespread rain. Una was the hottest in the region, recording a high of 35.2 degree Celsius compared to 42 degrees yesterday.

Bhuntar recorded a maximum temperature of 33.8 degree Celsius, followed by Sundernagar (30.4 degrees), Dharamsala (29.6 degrees), Nahan and Solan (28.8 degrees), Shimla (25.1 degrees) and Kalpa (21.2 degrees), a drop of between three and four degrees since yesterday.

The minimum temperature dropped by two or three degrees. Kalpa, Manali and Shimla recorded minimum temperatures of 11.8 degrees, 13 degrees and 13.2 degrees, respectively.
