Neurosurgeon Pramod Giri, who conducted a check-up of GN Saibaba who is lodged in Nagpur Central jail for alleged Maoist links, today ruled out the need of surgical intervention.

“After checking him yesterday, I felt no need to hospitalise him but got an MRI conducted. After discussing test results with government doctors at the superspecialty hospital, I found he doesn’t need any surgical intervention for shoulder and neck pain. I referred him back to Ritesh Sahu, a neurophysician who will do further check ups,” Giri told The Indian Express.

“Saibaba’s wife and brother were there during discussions and they were explained all details about the diagnosis.”

Saibaba’s medical check-up at a private hospital, and allowing his wife and brother to accompany him, follows a Bombay High Court order.

DU professor Saibaba was arrested for alleged Maoist links last year. Saibaba’s wife Vasantha and some activists had on Thursday alleged police did not allow them to meet Saibaba in hospital. They said they whisked him back to prison.

Festive offer

IGP Ravindra Kadam, who spearheaded police action against Saibaba leading to his arrest by Gadchiroli police in New Delhi last year, said, “We had to take him back to prison because the doctor said he needed no immediate hospitalisation and further check-up was to be conducted the next day. The doctor was selected as per choice and contrary to their statement in a section of the press yesterday they actually had a meeting with the doctor.”

Giri said, “Saibaba’s wife and brother had a discussion with me at the hospital and also met Saibaba. The HC said hospitalisation if necessary. I did not find it necessary Thursday.” Vasantha could not be reached.
