Restaurant Review: Deccan Rendezvous
DECOR
In a nook between Apte and Ghole Road and a minute’s walk from FC road, is the small modern hotel, Deccan Rendezvous. I visited almost seven years ago when it had just opened and it has recently changed the management.
The rates for the rooms have reduced but not the service or the décor. Their all-day dining Glass Window, off the lobby, is pretty standard in terms of look and feel.
It is comfortable and roomy but nothing spectacular. Service is very obliging even if they sometimes do things too much by the book. They have a decent bar, cocktail and wine list with a surprisingly extensive range of local Indian wines.
FOOD
Glass Window serves three cuisines, Indian, Thai and European and there are some dishes which can be considered ‘stars’ in each of those. You simply must try the kakori kebab, the finely minced Lucknowi preparation, shaped like a seekh. It simply melts in the mouth. Considering there is no special Indian chef nor an Indian restaurant in the hotel I am surprised how they get this recipe spot on. In the European starters, the
stuffed mushroom caps, crumb fried and filled with vegetables and cheese, was outstanding as are the pepper and cheese crostini. The tom ka ghai soup was flavoursome but very similar to the Thai green curry, however the French onion soup with a rich stock base and a cheese croûte on top, is pretty close to the original. In the main course do try the pollo saltimbocca, rolls of chicken, stuffed with chicken salami. The vVeg Caesar was fresh and generous. My only complaint would be the proliferation of red and yellow peppers on every continental dish which could perhaps be toned down. Dessert is pretty standard with brownies and chocolate cake. There aren't any options for old fashioned European food. Since Deccan Rendezvous should perhaps increase their repertoire of these retro dishes which people clearly love and miss.
Prices are very reasonable. A nice pause in the Deccan area.
PROS AND CONS
Fabulous location. Menu could be more focused.
