Series of crimes rock Mumbai in 24 hours

At least 8 offences of murder, attempt to murder, robbery and accident have been registered in various police stations

The Mumbai police have registered a series of serious crimes ranging from murder, attempt to commit murder, fatal accident, suicide and robbery in the past 24 hours. The eight offences registered were in Matunga, Andheri, Trombay, Kalachowkie, Shivaji Nagar, Dindoshi and Amboli areas.

In one of the cases, brother of actress Poonam Jhawer was murdered in Andheri. Jhawer made her Bollywood debut in 'Mohra' wherein she was paired against Suniel Shetty. The Andheri police have registered a case of murder against an unknown person for allegedly killing Kamal Bhavan (52), brother of Jhawer (38), a resident of Indralok Bungalow at Lokhandwala Circle. According to Jhawer, her brother was murdered in Andheri (E).

Jhawer's brother sustained bruises across the body. His body has been sent to Cooper Hospital for post mortem.

At Matunga, one Sachin Sawant alias Bunty (32), was found murdered on a footpath near Don Bosco School. According to the Matunga police, the assailant had bludgeoned him to death. The police have registered a case of murder against an unknown person.

Three persons brutally attacked former corporator Shabbir Khan (40) at the Azad Nagar area of Trombay. According to the police, during a ward committee meeting on Wednesday, the issue of unauthorised construction in the gaothan area was raised by Khan after which three persons attacked him with weapons. Trombay police have registered an attempt to commit murder case in this matter.

Shivaji Nagar police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly attacking a six-year-old girl with a sword. According to the police, the accused person was trying to attack one Irshad Khan over some trivial issue when the accused missed the target and the sword went on to hit the girl. The girl was rushed to Rajawadi hospital and was later after treatment. The police have recovered the sword.

At Dindoshi, a 35-year-old pedestrian was killed after he was hit by a speeding tempo. Dindoshi police have arrested errant the tempo driver. According to the police, one Sharad Gaardi was hit by the tempo when he was crossing the road in the Pushpa Park area near Western Express Highway in Goregaon (E). Gaardi was rushed to Shatabdi hospital, where he was declared dead.

A 45-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping off from a building at Kalachowkie on Thursday morning. According to the police, deceased Sujata Sawant stayed with her mother-in-law, husband and her nine-year-old child at Laxmi Building at DL Road in Kalachowkie. "When she was at home with her mother-in-law, Sawant went to the terrace of the five-storey building and jumped from there. The police was informed and Sawant was rushed to JJ hospital where she was declared dead. We have recorded the statements of Sawant's family members and it appears that she was suffering from some ailment. We have registered a case of accidental death," said an officer from Kalachowkie police station.

Amboli police have registered a case against three persons, including two women, for allegedly committing a robbery. According to the police, the trio entered at the Shashtri Nagar residence of one D Satyanarayan Raju on the pretext of selling SIM cards. "The women then threatened Raju to defame him by making false claims and then decamped with valuables worth Rs2 lakh," said an officer from Amboli police station.
