JNU may hold entrance tests in Dec

June 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A controversy seems to be brewing at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after a proposal to move dates of entrance examinations to various courses here from May-June to December was put forward during an Academic Council (AC) meeting in April. The proposal was later approved in a Standing Committee meeting on June 15.

The proposal has pitted student associations and teh administration against each other. While on one hand, the teachers unanimously supported the move in the AC meeting, student unions at JNU are against it and are ready to protest if the administration decides to implement it. forcefully. The JNU administration has, however, said it is just a proposal and will not be implemented until it gets required clearances.

JNU spokesperson Poonam Kudesia said: “This was just a proposal at the AC meeting. An official stand is yet to be taken.”

Student unions like the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) have come out against the move.

“It is undemocratic that the proposal was put forward in the meeting without notice or consultation with student representatives,” JNUSU vice-president Anant Prakash Narayan told The Hindu.
