Police try to soften image on Maoist front

June 19, 2015 04:07 am | Updated 04:07 am IST - RAIPUR:

A senior police officer in Bastar surprised everyone on Wednesday by bringing a woman Maoist for treatment to a hospital in Jagdalpur.

On Thursday, Shivram Prasad Kalluri, Inspector-General of Police, Bastar, shared reports and photos of his gesture on WhatsApp groups with a message: “Let people differentiate between exploiters and well-wishers of tribal people.”

Chinni Oyami, 26, from Bijapur district, who had been working with the Maoists since 2005, fell ill last week and had been admitted to a hospital in Bijapur. The police surrounded the hospital, but allowed her to continue treatment. Mr. Kallur later took her to the Jagdalpur hospital.

This is the second instance in a week of the Bastar police going out of the way to provide help to injured or ailing Maoist cadre in their custody. An injured Maoist commander, Hemchand Maravi, was flown from Kondgaon to Raipur for better treatment last week.
