Greed is one of man’s biggest weaknesses and potentially, his most powerful enemy. It is this message that was highlighted in the play Sampat, Yashoda Aur Mai, staged during the Madhya Pradesh Rangotsav at Bharat Bhavan.
The original play was based on a Marathi story, directed by Shreeram Jog and scripted by Rajan Khan. It has been translated into Hindi by Praful Jain. The story of the play revolved around its three characters — Sampat, Yashoda and Purushottam, who is a writer and a lustful man staying with his wife and children.
Purushottam is good friends with the wise Sampat and keeps visiting his house frequently, where he meets Yashoda. Purushottam is attracted to Yashoda and wants to bring her into his life at any cost. He succeeds in doing so but contracts AIDS in the process, harming his future.
The two hour long play kept the audience engaged till the end, its strong dialogues playing a key role in doing so. While Jog played the role of Purushottam, Yashoda was played by Tanvi Akolekar and Sampat by Lokesh Neemgaonkar.
