Former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw from the Aegon Classic after injuring her left foot.
Azarenka won her first round match against Varvara Lepchenko at the grasscourt event but was unable to take to the court for her second-round match against Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas.
The 25-year-old suffered a similar injury more than 10 months ago, and is now in a race to be fit for Wimbledon which begins on June 26.
"It's very disappointing for me to make this decision, but I tried to practice, and it just doesn't feel 100 per cent," she said.
"I don't think it is the right time for me to take a risk right now, especially right before Wimbledon, and I need to make sure I have the best preparation possible."
Seven of the 16 seeds have already been ousted from the tournament, with last year’s Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard beaten by Kristina Mladenovic and former world No 1 Ana Ivanonvic falling to Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito.
