Between now and December 2016, power-starved Uttar Pradesh will see projects for 6,000 mw being commissioned. That should bring to an end a period of power scarcity and not compel the state to overdraw from the grid.
The Bajaj Group commissioned the first of three units of the 1,980 mw (3X 660 mw) super critical thermal power plant at Lalitpur in Bundelkhand district last week; the first unit of the 500×2 Anpara D project starts commercial operations soon, followed by the second unit in August. “From now until December 2016, we will see one unit or the other being commissioned. The first unit of the 1,980 mw Bara thermal power project of Jaypee Infratech is expected to be commissioned by end June or July and two more units are expected to start operations by April 2016,”said SK Agarwal, director, finance, UP Power Corporation.
The state sector too will contribute to the supply of power with both units of the 1,000 mw Anpara D project becoming operational by August and the Meja 660x 2 joint venture project also starting operations by March 2017. By early 2017, UP would be generating extra 6,000 mw of power. The total availability of power in UP as of today hovers around 10,000 mw. Shailendra Dubey, former chief engineer of UPPCL and chairman of All India Power Engineers Federation, points out that although UP will clock its best generation in 2017, demand is likely to keep growing.
Analysts see the increased power in the state, ahead of polls in 2017, as helping the Akhilesh Yadav government.
