INDORE: To inculcate the habit of reading among youngsters, a mother and son duo of Saket Nagar has come up with a novel concept of free and portable library ‘Little Free Library’, which will provide free books on sharing basis.
Inspired by the work of little free library of US, Taruna Pagarani and her son Nishchay Pagarani, decided to start this library. “Both of us searched on the internet about the concept of free libraries and learned that this concept was started in 2009 in United States of America by Todd Bol in memory of his mother.
This library has inspired around more than 25,000 such mini libraries all over the world,” said Taruna, a homemaker and social activist.
They registered themselves at Little Free Library (LFL) online and got approval after receiving Little Free Library’s charter number. “This charter number is important and now we are authorized to run this small library,” she said adding that they have purchased a book shelf and installed it in their house.
“The concept of LFL is ‘take a book, return a book’. People living nearby or from anywhere can share their favorite books, literature and story books, place it inside the box or keep it on the doorstep. We would stick LFL stamps on those books and anyone may stop by and pick up a book or two and bring back another book to share,” said Nishchay, a student of Class X.
He said LFL promotes literacy and love for reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. “Such libraries help develop a sense of community as people also share skills, creativity and wisdom,” said Nishchay, who has been very fond of reading and wanted to put his huge collection of books to good use.
Nishchay has been made official steward of LFL-Indore by LFL organization US. “We believe that LFL is the first free library concept in the state, wherein adults and kids in the neighborhood can take a book and return a book in exchange and the steward manages the library,” he added.
