RAJKOT: Monsoon has just set in but flood relief work has already started in Gondal town, which has received close to 428mm rainfall in the last three days.
Around 10,000-15,000 people have been left homeless as sudden downpours resulted in flooding in low-lying areas like Mafatiyapara, Gulabnagar, Damodia and Panchnath. Ten houses have also collapsed in the town.
Large number of people have lost their huts and the grains that they had stored have been rendered useless. Charity and religious organizations are providing food to those affected daily. Sources said it will take some time for the situation to normalize in these areas if there is no further rainfall.
Gondal has already received nearly 70% of its average annual rainfall in just three days. For the first time in so many years, all lakes and dams near the town — Ashapura, Setubandh and Veri Talav — are overflowing so early.
Meanwhile, monsoon covered more parts of Saurashtra on Tuesday with rainfall being reported in most of the coastal districts.
Two persons also died after being struck by lightning. While one died in Bagthala village of Morbi district, a tribal farm labourer was killed in Hadiyana village of Jamnagar when he was working in the field.
The intensity of rain has surprised people this year. On Tuesday, most roads of Jasdan town near Rajkot were waterlogged after receiving 75mm rains in just two hours. Rajkot city also got about 30mm rainfall in just one hour in the evening.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials have issued rainfall warning for next four days.
"Light to moderate rain would occur at few places in districts of Saurashtra region during the next four days," said a weather official. The weather department also said that the region will witness increase in rainfall activity over south Gujarat and Saurashtra.
