Their letter has some impact; director, however, warns against politics on campus

After days of protest, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry blinked on Tuesday to the written letter from FTII students, who have been against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as a chairman of the Governing Council and showed their readiness to have a dialogue with the students’ body in order to resolve the ongoing staff-off and also asked them to end the strike and bring the institute to normalcy.

The Ministry on Tuesday afternoon conveyed their decision to the institute through D J Narain, the Director who after receiving the communiqué from the ministry spoke to agitating students and conveyed the message.

While talking to mediapersons outside his office on FTII campus, Narain said the I&B ministry has acknowledged the letter sent by the agitating students, who have demanded in the letter that Chauhan should not be appointed as the chairman.

He said the ministry has also appealed to the students to end the strike and bring academics to normalcy.

However, the president of the students’ body Harishankar Nachimuthu said they are happy that the government has blinked to their letter. However, they are going to discuss their further line of action and will communicate this to the director soon. “We have not yet decided anything. However, soon, we will come out with our decision,” he said.

Director Narain too appealed to the students to end the strike so that academics will not be disturbed.

Meantime, on Tuesday also, political parties were seen taking the limelight at the protest with Nitesh Rane, Congress MLA and son of Narayan Rane, another heavyweight in the Congress party, paying a visit to the institute and supporting the students. However, Narain pulled up the students and warned them against allowing political figures into the ongoing agitation. “We have asked students to discourage sharing the platform with any political party leaders and if any political parties want to show their solidarity, they can do it outside the institute,” he said. On Sunday, Yogendra Yadav too visited the institute.
