In the words of Comic Book Guy – it's the Worst. Announcement. Ever.

Nancy Cartwright, the voice of iconic character Bart Simpson, confirmed she had pulled the plug on her upcoming appearances at the Supanova Pop Culture Expos in Sydney and Perth.

The popular actor, who has worked on The Simpsons since its debut in the 1980s, penned a personal apology to Supanova event director Daniel Zachariou on Tuesday morning.

"My team has conveyed how hard you have worked on getting me to your show and how accommodating you have been to make this appearance happen. I greatly appreciate all of your, and your team's, efforts for me to be with you all in Australia," Cartwright wrote.

"I am so disappointed that I cannot visit with my fabulous fans down under this time!

"Hopefully, we will be able to plan another Australian event for my participation in the near future."

Cartwright explained the cast and crew of The Simpsons had "been playing catch up on the show" and that producers had scheduled work which clashed with the actor's planned trip down under.

Supanova management said Cartwright was due to depart Los Angeles, bound for Sydney, on Tuesday night.

"While this is obviously a blow to our fans of Nancy and The Simpsons, we're fortunate to still be hosting our biggest line up ever with an amazing cast bursting at the seams from the worlds of film, TV, anime, cartoons, comics, wrestling, authors and the internet," Mr Zachariou said.

"We'll also make sure, in conjunction with our ticketing partners Moshtix, that any Nancy Cartwright specific pre-purchases are refunded ASAP."

Supanova will run at the Sydney Showground this weekend, before heading to the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from 26 to 28 June.
