Judge refers prison inmate to hospital

June 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - COIMBATORE:

A Coimbatore Central Prison (CCP) inmate who was produced at the court here on Monday was taken to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment based on the direction given by the III Additional Subordinate Judge, A. Muraleetharan.

The direction was given so that he could get treatment for injuries that he sustained in an alleged attack by prison authorities and warders last week.

The prisoner, I. Basheer  alias  Thakali Basheer (32) of G.M. Nagar in Ukkadam, also alleged that there was a threat to his life by the prison officials and warders, warning him not to talk about the harassment. He was arrested in connection with a few cases, including theft. He was among the four CCP inmates from whom mobile phones were seized last Friday.

On Monday, he was brought to the court as verdict was due in a case against him by Ukkadam Police in 2012 for damaging tables and chairs in a Tasmac outlet. He was produced before Mr. Muraleetharan in the absence of II Additional Subordinate Judge who had heard the case and was on leave.

Basheer’s counsel S. Stalin said that he showed the injuries to the judge and also gave a written complaint on it. “The judge assured to forward it to Judicial Magistrate III to inquire into the allegations,” Mr. Stalin said.

Basheer’s wife Sulekha (30), daughters and mother who came to the court were shocked to see Basheer limping. “We want persons behind this attack to be punished and safety of my husband to be ensured,” Sulekha said. When contacted, prison authorities denied the charges .
