S.P. Udayakumar, who spearheaded protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tirunelveli district, has appealed to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to help him recover his impounded passport and those of hundreds of youths against whom “false” charges were pressed.
He wrote a letter to Ms. Swaraj on Monday (a copy of which is available on his Facebook page) seeking help to resume his teaching activities abroad to generate the “much-needed” income for his family.
The letter comes a day after Ms. Swaraj defended her recommendations to the U.K. to provide travel documents to former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi to visit his ailing wife in Portugal. Ms. Swaraj said the recommendation was made on “humanitarian” grounds.
Mr. Udayakumar said that the then Congress Government at the Centre, led by Manmohan Singh, had impounded his passport.
“Since I hear that you have been helping individuals with passport and visa issues on humanitarian grounds, may I request you to recover my impounded passport as soon as possible, please,” the letter said.
