Chain-snatching suspect nabbed
The entire city is on high alert over unabated chain-snatching instances last week. Lokayukta judge VG Bopaiah’s alert gunman reportedly averted a robbery on Monday. Amidst heavy traffic in KR circle, K Siddaraju nabbed a person after people onboard a BMTC bus raised an alarm.
It all started around 1.45 pm, when 40-year old Siddaraju was walking back towards the Lokayukta office after a meal. A woman on bus route 302 raised an alarm as the suspect ‘tried to escape’ after attempting to steal her chain. The woman and others on board screamed at the man as he tried to reach his accomplice, who was said to be waiting on a Pulsar. Siddaraju ran along the bus, first blocked the man on the bike and then caught the alleged thief while the bus was moving, a witness said.
“I rushed towards the bus and grabbed the back of this man’s collar. Then, the bus stopped and the driver and conductor alighted. All commuters accused the man of trying to steal the chain. A traffic head constable joined me in nabbing the man. To get him away from the volatile onlookers, we handed him over to the Vidhana Soudha police,” Siddaraju said.
Lokayukta staff, who joined Siddaraju after witnessing the chaos, said efforts were made to nab the accused’s bike-borne friend, but in vain as he fled the spot.
“The accused claimed innocence. However, thanks to witness accounts, we handed him over to the police,” V Purushottam, another gunman attached with Lokayukta, said.

Police said the accused, identified as Abusar, has claimed being a maulvi from Padarayanpura and (the matter) is being investigated in detail. “Those related to (the accused) have been summoned. He has claimed that he was going to the Canto-nment Railway Station to pick a relative and after realising that the bus was bound to KR Puram, he tried to alight the bus. He said he happened to brush past the woman while rushing out, and her husband taking an objection, alleged that he attempted to steal her chain,” a police officer said.
