Ontario is spending $2.5 million over two years to help the City of Windsor host the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships.

It will be Canada’s first time hosting the championship and the first time it has been held in North America since 2004.

The event is expected to draw more than 2,500 visitors to Windsor, including over 900 elite swimmers from 175 countries.

Windsor will host the swimming championships from Dec. 6-11, 2016. It will feature 46 events - 34 individual and 12 relays - for a total of 138 medals.
