SURAT: Marital discord claimed four lives, including three of kids, in a village of
Dang district on Sunday. A 28-year-old farm labourer poisoned his three small children — two sons and daughter — and later killed himself, in Dhavlidod village of Ahwa taluka.
Police said Sanjay Mahakal forced his children, Rohit (8), Roshni (6) and Roshan (4), to drink soda that was mixed with some poisonous substance.
He too consumed the drink after them. His relatives found all four lying unconscious outside their house and immediately called ambulance. While Mahakal and Roshni succumbed immediately, his two sons died during treatment at
Ahwa Civil Hospital.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that Mahakal had frequent fights with his wife Lakshmi since few months,” said V V Chaudhary, superintendent of police, Dang.
Fed up of daily fights, Lakshmi left the house on June 11 with the children and started living with her parents in Borkhet village. Sources said that Mahakal used to beat her daily after consuming liquor. He used to also thrash his children.
On Sunday, Mahakal went to Borkhet and persuaded Lakshmi to return. However, she was adamant on not living with him. Mahakal then took the children and returned to his village.
Police believe that Mahakal must have purchased soda and the poisonous material on the way while returning home with his children. He must have mixed the
poison in soda and offered it to kids. Police are investigating to find out what kind of poisonous material he used to kill the children and self.
