AHMEDABAD: It was the woman member of the gang which lured co passenger into intimacy leaving a chance for other members of the gang to steal valuables from their luggage.
Crime branch sleuths on Thursday arrested a gang of five, including a woman for cheating passengers of jewellery and cash, who used to sit their taxi.
Crime branch officials said they have recovered jewellery worth Rs 3.61 lakhs and the SUV which they used to run as taxi at various places in Gujarat.

Crime branch officials said on a tip off they arrested Tajuddin Ansari and his girlfriend Vaishali Ansari , resident of Rakhial, Mohammed Sajid Shaikh of Ghatkopar Mumbai, Shadab Ansari, resident of Vatva and Ejaz Ansari. “Apart from Ahir, who stays as with Tajuddin all the accused are hailing from Uttar Pradesh” said a crime branch official.
Inspector SS Raghuvanshi of crime branch said the gang used to take passengers from Highways.
“They used to make the passengers keep their belongings on the back seat of the SUV. Vaishali then used to mingle with the passengers given a chance to gang members to steal valuables from the baggages” added Inspector Raghuvanshi. Crime branch sources said later the gang used to halt the vehicle and drop the passengers saying the vehicle has developed a mechanical problem would not be able to travel further.

Police sources said the gang used to sell the stolen jewellery with a person in Asarwa and to Sajid Shaikh’s sister Tabbasum, a resident of Ghatkopar in Mumbai.
Police officials said during primary interrogation of the accused it has come to light that the gang has committed such thefts in Madhavpura, Satellite, Mehsana, Palanpur and places like Surat, Navsari and Valsad on Ahmedabad Mumbai Highway.
“We are hunting for the receivers of the stolen jewellery. We are also sending a team to Mumbai to arrest Tabassum” said a crime branch official.
