Kudankulam plant expansion bid opposed

Anti-nuclear activists have come out against the move to set up additional reactors at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP). People’s Movement against Nuclear Energy convenor S.P. Udayakumar and anti-nuclear activists N. Subramanian and Maglin Peter told a press meet on Thursday that the Centre was going ahead with the plans to set up a nuclear park at Kudankulam. The Centre had already signed an agreement with Russia for supply of two reactors in addition to the two already installed at Kudankulam. The two reactors were dysfunctional and had to be stopped 24 times after being commissioned 18 months ago owing to use of substandard parts, confirming the worst fears of people, they alleged.
