EU, Mexico express concern over Syria situation

BRUSSELS, June 12 (KUNA) - The EU and Mexico Friday expressed "extreme concern "by the deteriorating situation in Syria, and called for an end to all violence and suffering of the Syrian population, and to find a political solution that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people. The EU and Mexico in a joint statement after their summit in Brussels today expressed their support for the ongoing negotiations between Iran and 5+1 to reach a mutually agreed long-term comprehensive solution on Iran's nuclear programme. The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and called on all sides to implement their commitments under the Minsk agreements to solve the conflict in the country peacefully.
The statement noted that the EU and Mexico agreed to foster a closer and stronger Strategic Partnership with the purpose of bringing more common prosperity and wellbeing to their 626 million citizens, and strengthening cooperation to share global responsibility on regional and global issues of common concern.
It welcomed Mexico's resumed participation in UN peace-keeping operations, in the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and the UN Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Speaking at a press conference after the summit, President of the European Council, Donald Tusk said " Mexico matters for the European Union. Mexico is our strategic partner. We want to cooperate in important issues such as climate change,trade and investment, human rights and the Post 2015 development agenda." On his part, Enrique PENA NIETO, President of Mexico told the joint press conference that the EU is the second biggest investor in Mexico with an accumulated foreign investment of more than 121 billion euro.
