Kiribati cop demoted over gear sale bid

Kiribati police have demoted a senior police officer for trying to sell police brass band equipment to a church group.

The Kiribati Independent says the matter was referred to the Police Professional Conduct Committee, which demoted him and removed him from his position as band master.

The equipment had been donated by the Taiwanese embassy.

Under normal procedures, the police may sell items that are no longer needed through a tender, and the funds are then deposited into the police account.
