Fake police decamps with jewels, Rs 78,000

The culprit also got away with the 1.25-sovereign gold chain that Ilabaksh was wearing
Coimbatore: Yet another fake cop made away with Rs 78,000 and 1.25 sovereigns gold chain from an elderly man on the pretext of conducting a vehicle check here on Wednesday.
Seventy-six-year-old S.K. Ilabaksh, a butcher from Muslim Colony in Madukarai was returning home on a two-wheeler when a man claiming to be a cop stopped him near Saradha Mill Road in Podanur and asked to show vehicle documents.
On knowing that the elderly man was a butcher, the accused told him that he was a member of Blue Cross Society and that he had received complaints against him on illegal slaughtering of cows.
Even as the victim gave his license and other documents, the fake cop carried out a search and found Rs 78,000 kept in the ‘carrier’ of the vehicle. The culprit also got away with the 1.25-sovereign gold chain that Ilabaksh was wearing and left the place asking him to get back his belonging at the Podanur police station.
When he visited the station to receive his belongings, Ilabaksh came to know that he had been duped by a conman. Based on his complaint, the Podanur police registered a case under IPC section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and a search is on to nab the culprit. Just yesterday, two fake cops had cheated two elderly persons, S. Natraj, 79 from Balasubramaniyam Nagar in Peelamedu at Dhamu Nagar in Puliakulam and Mallammal, 70 from Mettupalayam following the same modus operandi. The police are conducting further investigations.
