A middle-aged man was allegedly subjected to torture by a kangaroo court in West Bengal’s Malda district. The incident took place on Sunday night. One person had been arrested in the case so far.
Tarul Seikh (40) of the district’s Englishbazar area and a part-time worker in a local hardware shop was accused by the shop owner Hepajul Rehman of stealing Rs.8,000 from the shop. A kangaroo court was held on Sunday night where Mr. Hepajul along with others pressurised Mr. Seikh to admit that he had committed the theft and asked him to pay the amount. After he refused, Mr. Seikh was stripped and paraded around with a brick hung from his private parts.
On Monday he was rushed to the local health centre due to excruciating pain but was later shifted to Malda Medical College as his condition deteriorated.
“The complaint mentions such an act of torture. But so far no evidence has been found to corroborate the charge. However, there was assault and onw Shamin Seikh has been arrested in the case,” Superintendent of Police of Malda Prashun Banerjee told The Hindu .
However, Communist Party of India-Marxist MLA Khagen Murmu said that the victim had told him that he was “sexually assaulted”.
