Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday accused PM Narendra Modi of playing a “dangerous duplicitous game” by projecting himself as the champion of good governance, even while allowing attempts to foment communal polarisation.

An “atmosphere of fear and foreboding” has been deliberately created, she said, as she spelt out broad contours of the party’s revival plans.

Addressing Congress CMs for the first time after the party’s Lok Sabha poll debacle, Sonia said the substance and style of the NDA government are cause of great concern. “There is unprecedented centralisation of power, deliberate bypassing of Parliamentary procedures and practices, threats to civil society and warnings to the judiciary. The PM has broken with tradition and taken domestic politics to audiences abroad. Boastful claims, exaggerations and downright falsehoods characterise his statements. His poll promises are being dismissed, in the words of his key colleague, as ‘chunavi jumlas’,” she said.
