MUMBAI: A call centre employee attempted to kill himself by jumping off the Vashi Bridge after killing his wife at their Andheri residence on Tuesday. However Rajesh Nagappa’s (30) attempt to end life failed when few fishermen present at the spot rescued immediately after he jumped in the river at around 5pm. Nagappa called the DN Nagar police in the afternoon after killing his wife and informed that he has killed his wife and is going to end his life too.
Police has taken custody of Nagappa and has booked him for murder and suicide attempt.
At around 6.15pm, the DN Nagar police was alerted by their counterpart at Vashi that a man identified as Nagappa has attempted suicide by jumping the Vashi creek but was survived after he was fished out by the fishermen. “Both Nagappa and his wife, according to their neighbours, has been fighting since past few days. Nagappa suspected his wife and there has been differences and fought over petty issues ever since they got married a year ago,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (DN Nagar division) S Dhanedar.
The matter worsened in the afternoon at their residence in a chawl at Khaturwadi in Andheri (west) when Nagappa and his wife had a fight. In a fist of anger, strangled his wife and later stabbed her all over her body. Meanwhile neighbours did not hear noise or fight from the victim’s house. Nagappa, according to the police, after killing Ritu locked the door from outside at around 3.30pm and fled away.
Before taking the extreme step, Nagappa called the police control and alerted that he has killed at their Andheri residence and locked the house from outside. Police reached the spot immediately and entered Nagappa’s house after breaking the door and found the victim dead lying in pool of blood. After ending his call, Nagappa jumped into Vashi creek but the fishermen saved him and handed him to the Vashi police. Later in the night the DN Nagar police took his custody. He will be produced before the Andheri court on Wednesday.
