Ford considered it was high time the Transit Connect workhouse received a new powerplant under the hood and, as a result, the hard-working van got itself a new diesel engine.
We're talking about an improved 1.5-liter TDCi unit Ford claims to offer 'class-leading' 74.3 mpg (3.8 l/100 km) fuel economy, but there's a catch. The value is obtained by the ECOnetic model, but that's enough to count as a six percent improvement over the outgoing 1.6-liter TDCi engine.

Ready for launch this summer, the ECOnetic version packs 100 horsepower and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, a discrete bump from the 95 PS and 230 Nm (169 lb-ft) available on the outgoing model. Also, it comes with Auto-Start-Stop and Active Grille Shutter technology as standard.

It is worth noted that Ford is not overlooking the Transit Courier van, which will be a new home for the award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol engine that promises to return 55.4 mpg (5.1 l/100 km).

In the tech and safety department, Ford took what we already saw on the Kuga or Focus and made it available for the Transit Connect. As a result, the van features Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Information, Lane Keeping Alert, SYNC 2 infotainment system and Auto High Beam. In addition Transit Connect customers can now specify power-fold mirrors, with automatic operation when the vehicle is locked.

With these technological improvements, Ford hopes to attract even more commercial customers. They also claim that 'year to date, there has been a 93 percent increase in demand for the Transit Connect compared with the same period last year,' but it's obvious they won't settle for that.
