A.G. Perarivalan, one of the four convicts serving life sentence in Vellore prison for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was brought to Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital here on Monday for treatment following complaints of a urological ailment and joint pain.
The 43-year-old lifer was escorted into the GH complex at around 9.15 a.m. with heavy police cover, shielding him from the large media contingent that had camped right from 8 a.m. onwards.
He was produced before the Resident Medical Officer Ilango and treated as an outpatient at ward number 47 of the Urology department. Following a series of tests, he was whisked away around 12.45 p.m. from the hospital and taken to Puzhal central prison where he is now lodged.
On Sunday, he was shifted to Puzhal from Vellore prison following severe medical complications as per the advice of doctors who referred him to be treated at GH.
The GH authorities said he was referred to the Urology department, where a number of investigations were performed, including urine culture, blood tests and an ultrasound.
“He told us he had been suffering for several months. The ultrasound was normal, with no signs of a stone. However, he was found to be having chronic urinary tract infection,” an official said. Prison department sources added that Perarivalan has been suffering from urological complications for the last 14 years.
Antibiotics have been prescribed, and he has been asked to come for a review in three days, when the culture results will also be available, the medical officer said. For the knee pain, which is possibly osteoarthritis, one tablet has been given and Perarivalan has been advised physiotherapy, he added.
24 years in detention
Previously, Perarivalan was treated at Government Vellore Medical College.
Perarivalan is likely to be brought to GH for further treatment on June 11, when he would have completed 24 years in detention after he was arrested in Chennai by CBI’s Special Investigation Team in 1991.
