Senior GJM leaders approach HC for bail in Tamang case

A section of senior leadership of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), who have been named in a charge sheet filed by the CBI in connection with the Madan Tamang murder case, approached the Calcutta High Court on Monday seeking anticipatory bail.

Ten of the 24 leaders of the GJM named in the charge sheet including party president Bimal Gurung, his wife Asha Gurung and party MLAs Roshan Giri and Harkha Bahadur Chettri approached the High Court during the day.

A counsel representing the GJM leadership said that the case will come up for hearing later this week.

The GJM, which had in the past spearheaded a violent movement in Darjeeling hills over a separate State issue, has decided to take up the issue legally.

Though there was a near-total shutdown in the hills on Sunday, the GJM distanced itself from the strike and said that it would not call for any shut down in the hills.

The CBI had on May 29 filed a charge sheet against GJM leaders in connection with the murder of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) president Madan Tamang.

On the basis of the charge sheet, a city court had issued arrest warrants against the accused and asked the CBI to implement the order by June 26.
