They were nabbed from various parts of Dhaka on Sunday night and 'massive amounts' of explosives were found in their possession, Detective Branch Additional Deputy Commissioner SM Jahangir Alam told bdnews24.com.

Five kilograms of explosives, bomb making equipment, handmade bombs, chocolate bombs, cleaver, and books related to terrorism and the organisation’s proposed flag have been seized.

Detective Police’s Joint Commissioner Krishnapada Roy told a press briefing that the detained were trying to establish an organisation call ‘Bangladesh Jihadi Group’ following the IS model.

“They are active members of that organisation. They had also been planning bank heists in Dhaka and in the North Bengal region.”

Investigation would be carried out to find out whether they were associated with other terrorist groups and were being financed by any foreign entity and if so how much money they got.

A recent bank heist in Savar led the police to arrest several alleged members of Ansarullah Bangla Team, who were earlier members of the proscribed JMB, claimed the detectives.

Terrorist groups nowadays were committing crimes like robbery and extortion to fund their organisations, said the detective officials.

Six terror organisations, including HuJI, JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team, have been banned in Bangladesh.
