Confirmed! Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur in biopic

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play Sarabjit Singh’s older sister Daljeet Kaur in the biopic.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Dalbir Kaur Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has also given her nod to films with Karan Johar and Sujoy Ghosh will play Dalbir Kaur in ‘Sarabjit’.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who is currently busy wrapping up her comeback film ‘Jazbaa’, is a busy lady. After giving her nod to films with Karan Johar and Sujoy Ghosh, reports are that she will now be seen in Omung Kumar directed biopic on Sarabjit Singh.

The former beauty queen will play the role of Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit Singh’s older sister Daljeet Kaur in a biopic based on the man who was mistaken for an Indian spy, after he crossed over to India from Pakistan in 1990.

On May 2, 2013, Sarabjit succumbed to head injuries he sustained when several prisoners attacked him within the jail.

Sarabjit had been sentenced to death for alleged involvement in a string of bombings in 1990. India had maintained that Sarabjit,a farmer from a village located along the border,had strayed into Pakistan in an inebriated condition.

Omung confirmed the same saying, “Yes, I will be directing and co-producing Sarabjit. Even though I have three scripts lined up, this will be my next film after Mary Kom.” Now we hear that the director has roped in none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play the role of Dalbir Kaur in the film.

Director Omung Kumar has been receiving congratulatory messages for the same on Twitter.

Though the movie will be the story of Sarabjit, it will be told through the eyes of his sister, Dalbir Kaur, after his conviction of terrorism and spying by the Pakistani court and him getting sentenced to death in 1991, and the subsequent campaign stated by his sister for his release.

Omung Kumar told Bollywood Hungama, “Yes Aishwarya will be part of the Sarabjit biopic and will be playing the role of his sister, Dalbir Kaur.” Further talking about how he managed to rope in the actress Omung adds, “In fact when I narrated the script to Aishwarya she had tears in her eyes and said a straight yes to being a part of the film.”

Co-produced by Zeishan Qadri, who holds the rights for the film along with an NOC from Sarabjit’s sister and the family, the film will go on floor in the first week of October with a start-to-finish 60-day schedule. It will be shot in and around Punjab.

Titled ‘Sarabjit’, the film is being directed by ‘Mary Kom’ director, Omung Kumar.
