Dedham edges Apponequet in first round of Division 3 South baseball tournament

Matt Maloney’s RBI double lifted Dedham to a 1-0 extra-innings win over host Apponequet on Thursday in the first round of the Division 3 South baseball tournament.

Following a leadoff single in the eighth inning, Marauders pitcher Kasey Kirby attempted a sacrifice bunt. However, Apponequet (9-8) was able to get the lead runner at second.

Maloney then provided the heroics for Dedham (9-12).

Kirby shut down the Lakers in the bottom of the frame to punctuate his complete-game effort. He finished with three strikeouts and allowed just two hits.

“It’s a big win for us,” said Dedham coach Don Savi. “We get to play on and we’ll be ready for Monday.”

Dedham had a chance to score in the fifth inning. The Marauders had a runner on third with two outs but a ground out ended the threat.

Lakers pitcher Evan Meleedy held Dedham to just six hits, striking out three and surrendering one walk.

The Marauders travel to face Old Rochester (17-3) on Monday in the quarterfinals
