Building Ram Temple not a priority, says local BJP MP Lallu Singh

Stating that “sages and the Hindus” have given two to three years’ time to the government to construct the temple, he said: “No one can stop the construction of a temple at Lord Ram’s birthplace. But the atmosphere should be conducive. The PM has to earn the trust of the entire country and all sections of the society. He does not have a magic wand to do it in a year or two. He should be given time.”

Days after BJP president Amit Shah and Home Minister Rajnath Singh indicated that the ruling party does not have adequate numbers in the Parliament to address core issues like the Ram Temple—one of the promises made in the BJP manifesto—VHP leaders have demanded that the government should bring a legislation to pave way for the temple’s construction.

BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Katiyar has warned that if the issue is ignored, “the anger of Ram bhakts might erupt as a volcano.”

Singh, a staunch RSS worker and a first time MP, refused to comment on Katiyar’s remarks. “He is a senior leader. I do not want to comment on him.”

He said that as the MP of the constituency under which Ayodhya falls, he would be the first one to wish for a temple there. He also added that even Ayodhya needs to be prepared for the construction of the temple.

“Once the temple construction begins, people from across the country will be pouring in. There has to be infrastructure — roads, trains, hospital facilities etc. As of now, the area is not prepared for it,” he said.
