EastEnders actor Nitin Ganatra has revealed the Masood family will be rocked by a "very upsetting" storyline, which made him cry for the first time ever while reading a script.

The 47-year-old star - who plays Masood Ahmed in the BBC One soap - has admitted his on-screen family are set to face "something big" over the next few months which will affect them all the way up to Christmas.

He told Radio Times: "We're building up to something big that will be on screen in a couple of months' time. It's the first time I've ever got weepy reading a script and it gives me goose pimples just talking about it.

"It's a very upsetting storyline. Really sad - but full of heart."

In recent episodes Masood has started to track down his long-lost granddaughter, after finding out that his daughter Shabnam Masood (Rakhee Thakrar) - who just got engaged to market trader Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) - gave her baby up for adoption five years ago.

However, disaster is set to strike in the run-up to his daughter's wedding.

He added to the publication: "It's going to be a fun build-up to the wedding. There are rumours of [Kush's mum] Carmel and Masood getting it on and there's a lot of comedy. And then we're going to pull the rug out from under you."

But whatever happens doesn't look likely to affect Masood's estranged wife Zainab (Nina Wadia) and son Syed (Marc Elliott) as Nitin admitted the pair won't be returning for Shabnam's nuptials.

This comes after Bonnie Langford, who plays Kush's mother Carmel Kazemi, hinted her character could be set to hook up with MARTIN FOWLER!

She told The Sun: "We have been playing with the idea of her and Martin."

It looks like there are very sad times ahead for the Masood family and it certainly must be something big which is happening for Nitin to cry at the script as Masood himself has had his fair share of heartbreak over the years.

We've seen him become a borderline alcoholic, get involved in a love triangle with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) and David Wicks (Michael French), and struggle to deal with son Syed's homosexuality.

And if that's not enough his marriage ended in divorce and bankruptcy.

So we look forward to seeing what Soapland has to throw at the postman next!
