Two groups belonging to the Adi Dravida community in the Kalathur Adi Dravida Colony clashed with each other in the Kalathur village in Arakkonam sub-division on Wednesday afternoon.
The clash was a sequel to the allegation of one of the groups that the other group claimed wages for the work of desilting an irrigation tank under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) without actually doing the work.
P.K. Senthil Kumari, Superintendent of Police, Vellore district told The Hindu that a two-wheeler was damaged in the violence.
When members of one of the groups went to the Avalur police station and lodged a complaint against members of the other, the latter too went in large numbers and lodged a counter-complaint.
Based on the complaints, the police arrested 22 persons comprising 18 persons from one group and four from another
. Members of Makkal Kanram, a Kancheepuram-based non-governmental organisation visited the police station and protested against the arrest of the people.
Kannappan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Arakkonam said that the agitating residents of the Adi Dravida Colony and the members of the Makkal Manram threatened to block the road. But they were later pacified. The situation was brought under control, he said.
