Recovery specialists drafted in to save Edwards of Manchester

The store had been trading on the same site in the Barton Arcade in central Manchester since 1830. It was bought by former footwear agent Steve Fitzsimmons, who used to sell footwear brands Solaro and Democrato to Edwards’ previous owner Alan Clements, in May 2008.

Fitzsimmons has called in HJS to assess the viability of Edwards and explore ways it can continue trading.

HJS managing director Gordon Johnston said: “Edwards is one of the oldest shoe retailers in the UK and has enjoyed a buoyant position in the city for many years, catering for all types of clients including well known footballers. 

“The business has diminished to the extent that in its current format and location it is no longer viable financially. It is hoped it can be rescued and that it will be able to trade in the near future.”

The store stocked premium men’s footwear brands including Barker, Bass, Cheaney and Church’s, as well as women’s styles from Caprice, Gabor and Van Dal.

A meeting for creditors will be held on June 16.
