AHMEDABAD: Sardarnagar police have arrested a Himmatnagar-based agent, Sandeep Barot, who used to make bogus visas for Canada. Acting on a tip-off a few days back, police officials caught the 43-year-old Barot from a hotel in Naroda and recovered a bag containing passports with fake visas and several visa tickets of Canada.
“We found the passport of Borsad-based Rupal Rakesh Patel in the possession of Barot.
It had the visa stamp of Canada indicating travel permission from March 2015 to September 2015,” said K K Patel, senior police inspector, Sardarnagar. “He was also carrying several visa tickets for Canada.”
Patel said that when they verified the visa stamp on Rupal’s passport, it was found to be bogus.
Barot was arrested and charged under IPC sections 406, 420, 467, 468 and 120 (B). A local court has sent him to two-day remand.
During interrogation, Barot revealed that he got the fake visa made by an agent named Mansoor from Mumbai for Rs 13 lakh. “Barot used to take Rs 15 lakh-Rs 20 lakh for creating bogus visas and passports for his clients,” said K Patel. “He also revealed the names of six clients who had approached him.”
The police are now investigating the racket. Over the past two years, over 20 cases of illegal immigration have been registered in Ahmedabad. Earlier in March, Porbandar-based Tejas Joshi was held at the Ahmedabad airport for travelling as a fake Portugal citizen. Joshi had got a Portugal passport made in Goa on the basis of bogus documents.
